Our students have access to first-class facilities and work within a vibrant research community with strong links to regional health-service providers and industry. The Faculty Graduate School launched in August 2012, provides an exciting new development in our postgraduate provision. The Graduate School acts as the hub for our graduate community to encourage networking and sharing of good practice. Events will run throughout the academic year, with many organised through our student representatives. Research opportunities are multi-disciplinary, spanning biomedical, clinical and health policy areas. Examples include investigating the origin of diseases at the cellular/molecular level, developing clinical interventions for targeted therapies and improving health and social care for patients and populations. The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences Graduate School Training Programme (GSTP) is available to all students. Skills training spans transferable and professional skills in line with the Vitae Researcher Development Framework. The aim of the GSTP is to provide support at key stages of training and prepare students for careers in academia, health care, industry and beyond. The programme comprises of workshops, training courses, small group work and online training and support. It has been designed to cover skills essential for independent research (data interrogation, effective publications, literature searching), communication skills (presentations, improving citation rates, public engagement) and career management (CV writing, interview techniques, networking, securing fellowships). PhD projects are often specified in advance, with applications encouraged for pre-defined research studies. Alternatively, we encourage research proposals from applicants seeking PhD places through direct contact with academics and research groups. Often, the most rewarding projects are those developed in partnership between applicants and potential supervisors in overlapping areas of interest.
