Applicants must: Have the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an average grade C+ (C plus)\passed at one sitting from at least seven subjects drawn from subject groupings as specified by the Kenya National Examinations Council or its equivalent. OR Have one of the following combinations of passes in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education examination: Two (2) Principal passes obtained at the same sitting. OR Hold a Diploma of MMUST with a 'Credit' pass or higher or an equivalent Qualification from a recognized institution in the relevant field of specialization acceptable to Senate. Those with a 'Pass' Diploma will be considered if they have at least two years relevant experience after graduation.

For many of the above cases, students are expected to initiate the process through application. Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) The Higher Education Loans Board Support Government Sponsored students only in Public Universities, This year, HELB was extended support to PSSP students and employers on school based programmes, Also support students in private universities, They issue application forms annually to eligible students. They have a criteria of awarding loans which range from Kshs. 35,000/= - 60,000/= with a maximum bursary of Kshs. 8,000/=, Loans are disbursed depending on the level of need, Dissatisfied students are allowed to appeal for additional loan on condition that they attach tangible evidence. Students who do not provided honest information are disqualified. Loans are disbursed twice in an academic year i.e. 1st semester and 2nd semester. Students can download information from HELB Website. Constituency Development Funds (CDF) Various constituency Development Fund programme have varying arrangements of financial support for students from their respective constituencies. The criteria of award is unclear but applicants fill forms with a space for the Dean of Students to fill as a way of confirming the information given by the applicant is correct. The maximum award per student varies from constituency to constituency. Government Bursaries - Through the Ministry of Education The government offers support to need students by way of bursaries through the Ministry of education. Students write letters to the Permanent secretary (M.O.E.) to request for bursary The criteria is unclear but some students often benefit from these arrangement. Charitable Organizations There are several charitable organizations that offer support to needy students. These include the following: Rattansi, Oxfam, S.O.S., Oshwal Educational and Relief Board, Care International, Ford foundation, Save the Children and ACCES among others. These organizations have their own selection criteria and procedures for award of scholarships and bursaries. Where applicable the office of the Dean of students makes recommendations to these organizations for support of individual applicants. It is only Rattans that works with the Universities in the offer of financial support. Rattansi Educational Busary Fund Through the office of the dean of Students, the University negotiates with Rattansi for the donation of a fund to the university. This year, MMUST was awarded Kshs, 300,000/= (three thousand only). The University Rattansi educational fund committee is charged with the responsibility of disbursing the funds to needy students and duly informing this to the Trust (Nairobi). Students apply by filling a form after paying anon-refundable application fee of Kshs. 50/=. The application forms are scored and amounts awarded depending on the level of need as computed by the rattansi Committee Award Formular. Work-Study Programme 1. This is meant to mainly assist students to raise money for upkeep while at the university. (many students are unable to finance their stay at the university even after clearing university fees). 2. Students apply by filling a form obtained from the office of the Dean of students. This is normally towards the end of every academic year for consideration in the subsequent year. 3. The Dean of students consults various sections and departments to establish the positions available. 4. The forms are scored to determine the level of need of the applicants. 5. They are then ranked in order of need and posted to the various sections depending on the positions available. For example, if thirty (3) positions are available, the first thirty applicants raked in order of level of need (the needy) are appointed. 6. Successful applicants work for a maximum of 4 (four) hours per day but do not exceed ten hours per week. 7. They are paid Kshs. 30/= per hour and fill claim forms for the payment. Challenges in Finances Many student still drop out, defer, miss exams due to financial difficulties Academic performance of students is adversely affected because of time spent in looking for finance. Students resort to criminal/socially unacceptable means to earn income e.g. illegal business in halls of residence, unhealthy relationships (explorative), e.t.c

All applications should be accompanied by a non – refundable fee of Kshs. 1,000/= for undergraduate programmes.
