The programme will: provide a solid training in mainstream mathematics expose you to modern developments in mathematics allow you to take a broad range of options, including modules covering mainly pure mathematics, applied mathematics and some statistics reflect the research interests of the School What you study This course is designed to build on existing mathematical skills and allow students from a wide range of backgrounds to both broaden and deepen their understanding of their chosen branch of mathematics. The course allows specialisation in areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics and allows the flexibility to cover a range of areas or to concentrate in one specific area. There are a range of taught modules to choose from, which provide the opportunity to combine mainstream, advanced mathematical topics and innovative methods selected from the research interests of the School of Mathematics. Modules in pure mathematics concentrate on the areas of functional analysis, ring theory, differental geometry and mathematical logic. Applied modules cover areas including mathematical methods, fluid dynamics, integrable systems and numerical analysis. Statistical topics available include statistical computing, regression methods and time series. Learning and assessment Teaching is carried out through a mix of lectures and smaller group activities such as workshops. Most modules are assessed by written examinations, some with coursework components. The dissertation comprises a third of the programmes and is individually supervised by a member of staff. This is assessed by a written report and oral examination. What facilities are available The University has excellent facilities, including: one of the best academic libraries in the UK with over 2.8 million items; first class computing facilities, which are accessible remotely, via wireless network, or in 24 hour computer clusters; a Language Centre with English Language programmes for international students; and the Edge, a new swimming pool and gym. The School of Mathematics has several spaces for students to work together and share ideas, including computer clusters. There are also dedicated quiet working areas, a Reading Room containing useful reference material, tutorial rooms, and the maths coffee bar, Dolce Vita.
